--and Grab a Helmet
A recent study by the CDC’s National Center for Injury Prevention and Control found that nearly 213,000 people each year were treated in emergency rooms for injuries resulting from outdoor recreational activities such as hiking, mountain biking, and snowboarding. More than half of these injuries were among young people between the ages of ten and 24.
The report recommends reducing your risk of injury by maintaining your fitness level, knowing the limits of your skill and experience, and using the right equipment. That includes helmets for specific activities such as biking, rock climbing, snowmobiling, and sledding. The full report is available in this recent issue of Wilderness and Environmental Medicine.
